Creator’s Statement: There has been amazing progress in Asian representation in the entertainment industry lately, with the success of films like Crazy Rich Asians. While Hollywood tends to lean toward the East Asian experience, it is my hope to expand to the Southeast and support representation for Filipinos.

There is definitely progress with Filipino characters on TV shows like The Good Place, Superstore, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. But did you know that Filipinos are the third largest Asian population in the US? We should be seeing more of us.

It is my intention to put out an upbeat and informative PSA that will not only encourage Filipino representation in the entertainment industry, but help educate viewers on what it means to be Filipino. I will showcase a cast of well-known Filipino actors (Vincent Rodroguez III, Ginger Gonzaga, Eugene Cordero, Tess Paras, Jason Rogel) and an all-Filipino crew.

About the Creator: Charlene first garnered attention from tweeting as @charstarlene and Rolling Stone named her one of the “Funniest People on Twitter Right Now.” She went on to write and star in her own short films, and her most popular one, “I Forgot My Phone,” has over 51 million views on YouTube and was featured in The New York Times, USA Today, Time, NPR, Good Morning America, Vice, The Today Show, and more. Her first feature film, Unlovable, a Duplass Brothers production which she wrote and starred in with John Hawkes and Melissa Leo, premiered at SXSW in 2018 and received special jury recognition. It was picked up by MGM’s Orion Classics and released in theaters and VOD in 2018. Unlovable was made after Charlene sent a DM to Mark Duplass, then used Twitter to crowdfund over $64K, receiving support from people like Adam McKay, Jason Reitmen, Seth MacFarlane, and Patton Oswalt.
